(Trigger warning for abuse, electroshock therapy, torture, and ableism.)
The US court has overturned the ban on shock devices being used against disabled students, predominantly autistic students in the US.
The shock device being legalized is called the graduated electronic decelerator (or GED). This is a torture device that is used to ‘correct’ autistic behaviors / symptoms. Autistic people are shocked for stimming, and for having meltdowns, ect. This device was made popular by a behavioral center (the Judge Rosenberg Center, specifically) that is infamous for its abuse and torture of autistic / disabled patients.
(Image ID: someone is holding their arm out and resting it on a table, with their sleeve rolled up. Attached to their arm are wires, which connect to a small cube device.)
This is what the device looks like. It sends electric shocks into the victim’s skin; the victim often being restrained and held against their will. This is torture. GEDs have been reported to cause intense psychological trauma, PTSD, and physical injuries.
In March of 2020, the FDA ruled for GEDs to be banned. (Although, of course, they were still illegally used at a number of places.) This ruling has recently been appealed, and today, the US court of appeals has re-regulated the law to stop the use of GED. Sounds great, right? It would be!
... If not for a huge loophole in the wording, which basically allows this torture to continue. This device is going to have continued use on autistic students in order to “correct their behavior.”
“So.... What can I do??”
Great question! You can:
Listen to and boost autistic voices to spread awareness
As-of now (July 7th), autistic activists are trying to get #StopTheShock trending on Twitter, so Tweet out the hashtag if you have Twitter
If you’re in the US, email / call your legislators
the womens uniforms in athletics stuff always made me uncomfortable. Like, if you look at womens vs. mens gymnastics uniforms the difference is STARK. And given the male gymnasts seem to get by with their uniforms it doesn’t seem like it’s true that you need there to be that little clothing to allow the hard to do moves or whatever.
The myth that armour was heavy comes from the 16th century. Jousting armour in those days was incredibly heavy (110lb/50kg) because it is designed to absorb the impact of a joust. At this time armour for field combat (much lighter, like in the video) was dying out. To combat early firearms, armour became thick and heavy, the term bulletproof comes from armour that was in fact bulletproof against muskets and early firearms.
Heavy armour stuck in literature and poetry through the centuries which Hollywood picked up as a great meme.
TL;DR - Combat armour 13th to 15th century was lightweight. Late armour was heavy and became a meme for centuries.
A few years ago a Facebook thread showed up on my feed that was like "cryptically admit your darkest secret!" and so i went through the comments and some old dude made a comment that gave me massive creep vibes so I went through his online social media presence, eventually found his ancient myspace which was linked to a deviantart account that led to another random skeevy art website he was on where he was drawing nothing but ruby gloom cartoon porn so I went back to the Facebook thread and posted a screenshot of the account under his comment. He lost his shit and when I asked if the ruby gloom fixation was why his ex wife left him he blocked me.
I am not a lawyer, but I can decently interpret legalese and, being as I also suffer from tl;dr syndrome and assume others may as well, I took one for the team and went through the updated TOS for the post+ accounts and highlighted (what I understand to be) the most pertinent information, which ultimately comes down to this:
You cannot monetize copyrighted works (aka charge and earn money from fanfic, fanworks, etc) and if you do decide to put your fanworks behind a paywall via Tumblr, when you are inevitably sued, Tumblr will not protect you and will not defend you and you alone, personally, will be responsible for whatever monetary damages said lawsuit results in.
If anyone is a lawyer and knows I've gotten any of this wrong, please do not hesitate to correct me/this post.
1. Your paid account will not be hosted by tumblr; it is routed through a 3rd party.
2. By signing up for a paid account, you're entering into an agreement with Stripe, so in addition to Tumblr's TOS, you are also bound to Stripe's TOS.
3. Stripe, like Tumblr, will not defend you or protect you against any lawsuits.
4. Furthermore, you may end up owing Stripe money (indemnify = compensate)
5. Tumblr's TOS specifically states that you can't put any content on your post+ account that violates any laws, including laws that protect intellectual property rights of others. This is super important, because Tumblr's post+ FAQ also states that you can post anything that you would regularly post on tumblr, which I'm sure many will take to mean that gifsets, fanworks, etc are fair game, since all of that stuff can be posted on tumblr now. However, the difference is, you're not making money from the fanworks you're posting or reblogging now. Once money enters the equation, the game changes.
Tumblr is making it seem like any and all content goes for post+ accounts, knowing 90% of this site is fanworks. This is not true and you'll be opening yourself up for lawsuits if you charge for fanworks.
6. Tumblr further disclaims any and all liability in any legal issues.
tl;dr: Please do not make a post+ account, bc you will be opening yourself to lawsuits and if that happens, Tumblr's response will be not our problem, you agreed to all the terms which said you couldn't do that, sorry not sorry. Please protect yourself.
Can you imagine if east Asia had fetishized alternative medicine but for the west? Some guy from Thailand logging on to Facebook to post shit like "Modern doctors don't want us to know the wisdom of the the great western sages like 'Being covered in human shit and leeches all the time'"
By drinking this liquid metal you will be able to feel your cognitive abilities shift! Last person to reveal this ancient western secret was killed, share it while you can.
